Dealing with Hypothyroidism and Insulin Resistance
1. Get Tested for Insulin Resistance
The first step in properly treating insulin resistance is by identifying whether you have it in the first place. Your doctor should also help you interpret and understand your insulin levels. This way, you and your doctor could both come up with a customized health plan to keep your blood sugar down.
Ask your doctor if he or she could order these tests at baseline:
- Fasting insulin levels

- Fasting Blood Sugar levels
2. Know the Optimal Ranges of your Insulin Levels
The optimal ranges are your guide to know whether you do have insulin resistance. Knowing these figures will also help you figure out if your current hypothyroidism medication helps lose weight or if you need to supplement it with an insulin resistance treatment.
Here are the baseline figures for the following tests. Do remember that even though you did not go over or below the said figures, it does not mean you should rule out insulin resistance:
- Fasting Insulin levels: less than (<) 5
- Hemoglobin A1c (Abbreviate Hgb A1c): less than (<) 5.3
- Fasting blood sugar: Greater than (>) 85
3. Go on a Thyroid Fast Reset Diet
A thyroid fast reset diet can help reduce or alleviate the symptoms caused by high insulin levels. Your insulin resistance food list should include more nutrient-dense, real whole food. Minimize or cut back food high in refined carbohydrates and sugar. The more carb-loaded and sugary food items you eliminate in your diet, the best chances you have to treat your insulin resistance.
4. Undergo the Right High-Intensity Training (HIIT)
High blood sugar can cause a myriad of health problems, including weight gain. One way to counter off high blood sugar is to do the right exercise. High-intensity training is an effective way to sensitize your body to insulin. This is because this type of exercise comes with small bursts of maximum effort, all-out exercises under limited time followed by a moderate activity. It burns more unnecessary sugar and carbs as compared to doing one exercise for a longer period of time.
5. Smart Fasting
Fasting is a quick solution, but do it smart! If you have not fasted before, introduce it to your life such that it would not affect your overall well-being. You can start by fasting twice a week, and at 12-14 hours per fasting day. Have your dinner the same time you take it on non-fasting days. You can also combine meals (brunch or lunch and dinner) by taking them at a later hour.
6. Take Insulin Resistance Supplements
Fish oil, chromium, white bean extract, vitamin D, and DHEA are some of the insulin resistance supplements you can take for treatment. However, never use them as a standalone treatment for hypothyroidism nor consider them as a total solution for insulin resistance. Also, ask your doctor if you have other supplements in mind you would like to take to treat your insulin resistance.
7. Do Not Overdo
This last tip is very important. While it can get motivating for you to go on a diet, exercise, and take supplements to lose weight, do not overdo it. Not all bodies are equal, so your body’s reaction might take longer. Also, overdoing it will probably do more harm than good.
Before starting with your exercise, fasting, and supplements, check with your doctor if your thyroid medication is optimized and your adrenal glands can also handle the stress. One way to do this is to check post-meal glucose levels by using a blood sugar monitor. Your glucose levels 2 hours after every meal should be less than 120.
