September is thyroid cancer awareness month, but it is more than just about getting products out such as shirts and ribbons. It’s a month of building knowledge and understanding of thyroid cancer’s signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Here are some simple ways to promote thyroid cancer awareness and help spread the word!
How to Celebrate Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month
1. Find Out More About Thyroid Cancer
According to studies, cases of thyroid cancer continue to rise in the U.S. However, the good news is it can be highly treatable and survivable. Getting more information about it will not only help you understand the disease but can also equip you as you promote awareness to others.
2. Assist the Thyroid Cancer Survivor’s Association
The Thyroid Cancer Survivor’s Association (ThyCa) does a good job of getting the word out and sharing information about risk factors, symptoms, detection, and treatments for thyroid cancer too. They are a non-profit organization made up of thyroid cancer survivors, caregivers, and also, health care professionals.
3. Attend the Annual Thyroid Cancer Conference
ThyCa also holds an annual Thyroid Cancer Conference. This is one of their programs to spread awareness about thyroid cancer further and promote thyroid cancer awareness month. This year, they’ll be holding the conference during the first week of October in Baltimore, Maryland.
4. Find Out More About Thyroid Cancer Survivors
The issues that seem to get the least attention is perhaps the most important one: after having surgery to remove the thyroid, that person is hypothyroid for life. That said, symptoms of hypothyroidism can develop; weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, and depression can show up, thus need to resolve. These hypothyroid patients will also be taking thyroid hormone replacement medication throughout their lives and making sure they’re on the right medication and dosage.
5. Benefit from the information from NAH
The National Academy of Hypothyroidism is a group of thyroidologists who dedicate the promotion of information about thyroid health. They intend to spread information that is scientifically sound and medically validated concepts and information about the diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism. So you may take advantage of all the information about thyroid health and disorder offered by NAH.

The standard treatment for hypothyroidism which is based on the TSH level has historically left the majority of patients, which include thyroid cancer survivors, with suboptimal treatment for their hypothyroidism.
The NAH is working to change that by helping educate physicians and empowering patients too. They’re also advocating for changes in the way people see and manage hypothyroidism so all hypothyroid patients can feel and live well.
7. Spread the Information
One of the best ways you can observe thyroid cancer awareness month is by spreading the word. For example, you can join forums where you can find information and support among other thyroid patients and thyroid cancer survivors.
